Author's Comments:
While
the book is purely a work of fiction, almost everything that
happened to Dan Ryener came from real life. According to TV,
newspapers, etc., it was someone's history. I simply took the
stories from the media and wove them into one life. The scary
thing is, it could happen to you! You can't buck City
Hall [in this case Ruby County] and win!

Octopus
A Vietnam Veteran's Story |
|
Dan
Ryener lost an arm and a leg while fighting
for freedom in Vietnam. When he returned to Ruby County,
Alabama, he wondered what happened to "freedom." Dan's
ancestors had been bootleggers as long as anyone could remember.
They paid the current sheriff for that privilege. When Dan made
arrangements to open a Massage Parlor in Ruby County, he was
assured the law would not bother him - so long as he paid for
the privilege of being in business. Dan's father put up a thousand
dollars and County Squire opened for business. Then something
went wrong. Every aspect of Dan's life became a source of trouble.
Even his participation in religion got him thrown into jail.
He learned the law was indeed an Octopus with many tentacles.
As he lay dying, his new bride, a black lady, told him what had
happened to put him on the wrong side of the law. It was really
very simple. He had made the local judge so mad, the man not
only wanted to kill Dan. He had it done!
